The Solomon Islands has issued commemorative coinage under its own authority since independence in 1978, but by the 2000s the Central Bank had become a prolific vehicle for third-party bullion and novelty programs with no meaningful domestic circulation — this piece is firmly in that category. Gold-plated base metal issues of this type are produced almost exclusively for the international collector market, typically through European minting contractors.
