Additional information

John Paul II visited Berlin in June 1996, celebrating Mass at Tempodrom and meeting with both Catholic and Protestant leaders — a visit carrying particular weight given his role in the political destabilization of communist Poland a decade earlier. Niue has long issued commemorative silver under licensing arrangements that have little to do with the depicted subject and everything to do with the collector market, and this piece is a straightforward product of that trade.
