Issued by the Solomon Islands as part of a long-running series of commemorative circulation-format pieces, this coin honors Kennedy against the backdrop of his administration's direct involvement in the Pacific — a region the Solomons knows intimately. The naval battle of Guadalcanal was fought in Solomon Islands waters, and PT-109, the torpedo boat Kennedy commanded, was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in Blackett Strait in August 1943. Kennedy and his surviving crew swam to Plum Pudding Island, now formally renamed Kennedy Island.
