Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts a finely engraved three-quarter view portrait bust of Captain James Cook in 18th-century naval dress to the lower left, set against a detailed rendering of HMS Discovery under full sail on a textured ocean. Seabirds in flight animate the background field above the waves. The legend HMS DISCOVERY arcs along the upper left and HALF DOLLAR along the upper right, with CAPTAIN JAMES COOK inscribed in a smaller legend beneath HMS DISCOVERY. The composition conveys a strong sense of maritime drama befitting the celebrated explorer.

Aanvullende informatie

Nauru's relationship with commemorative silver issues is almost entirely economic rather than historical — the island has no meaningful connection to Cook's voyages, and HMS Discovery was the consort vessel on Cook's third and final expedition, during which he was killed at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779. Discovery returned to England without him, completing the voyage under Charles Clerke and then John Gore. Nauru has issued dozens of such topical pieces under licensing arrangements that treat the island's sovereign minting authority as a revenue instrument.
