The de Soto burial narrative has long fascinated historians precisely because it was engineered as a deception. When Hernando de Soto died of fever along the Mississippi River in May 1542, his officers sank his body in the river at night to prevent local Mississippian peoples from learning he was mortal — the expedition had spent years claiming he was a deity. The exact location has never been confirmed.
