The upper border carries the legend ★ AMERICAN ARMY ENTERING IN MEXICO ★ in raised Latin lettering within a decorative frame of fine dentilation. Below the main pictorial field, the partial lyric STAR-SPANGLED BANNER YET WAVE, is inscribed as a secondary legend. The lower border is adorned with a repeated geometric ornamental band echoing the Greek key motifs found on the obverse.
