The legend PIONEER arcs above the bust, flanked by IN GOD WE TRUST, with the commemorative date range 1673-1936 inscribed below, referencing the founding of the Elgin settlement through the centennial year. The field is smooth and unadorned, allowing the strongly modeled portrait to dominate the flan. The design reflects the Art Deco-influenced work of sculptor Trygve Rovelstad. |
