Reverse description The reverse features a full-colour photographic reproduction of the iconic scene of United States Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima, based on the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal taken on 23 February 1945. Six soldiers strain to erect the flagpole bearing a vividly coloured Stars and Stripes flag against a golden sky, set upon rocky terrain with a glimpse of ocean in the background. A coloured American flag banner sweeps across the lower portion of the field. The upper arc of the coin carries the legend '⋆ VJ ⋆ DAY ⋆ 80 ⋆' in raised gold lettering against a dark background, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day. The prooflike gold-plated field surrounds the central coloured scene.
