Additional information

The flag-raising on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945 — the second raising, staged for photographer Joe Rosenthal — became the most reproduced photograph of the 20th century and the basis for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington. Solomon Islands has no historical connection to the battle; the island chain, though a genuine Pacific Theater battleground in 1942–43, played no part in the Iwo Jima campaign. This is a novelty bullion-adjacent piece, gold-plated iron rather than a precious metal issue, produced for the collector souvenir market rather than any monetary purpose.
