Niue's coinage program has long operated as a commercial licensing vehicle, with the island's currency rights leased to private minting operations producing collector pieces that rarely if ever circulate on the island itself. This piece commemorates American independence through the framing device of the British crown — an irony the issuer almost certainly intended as a selling point rather than a provocation.
