Congress authorized the Boone Bicentennial half dollar in 1934 ostensibly to mark the 200th anniversary of Daniel Boone's birth — except Boone was born in 1734, making 1934 the correct centennial of that bicentennial claim only if you accept the organizers' creative arithmetic. The real impetus was fundraising for Kentucky historical projects, and the multi-year authorization that followed was nakedly commercial: the same basic coin was issued across five consecutive years, with small date additions to the reverse to manufacture collector variants and maximize sales.
The scheme drew sharp criticism from the numismatic press and contributed directly to Congress's 1939 decision to end the entire commemorative half dollar program.
