The Isfendiyarids — also known as the Jandarids — controlled the Black Sea coastal region of Kastamonu and Sinop during the fractious century following Mongol withdrawal from Anatolia. This half-dirham belongs to the joint-reign period of Sulayman I Pasha and İbrahim Pasha, an arrangement that reflects the dynastic instability characteristic of the smaller Anatolian beyliks competing for legitimacy against both the Ilkhanid shadow and the rising Ottoman pressure to the west. Silver coinage at this fractional weight was essential for local market transactions along the Black Sea trade routes the dynasty depended on for revenue.
