The pattern was part of exploratory work toward a rationalized coinage — the existing Moroccan currency of the period was notoriously chaotic, with debased silver fulus circulating alongside foreign coin at wildly inconsistent exchange rates. Paris was involved in discussions about a reformed issue, which explains why surviving patterns from this period frequently show French technical influence in their striking quality.
