| 正面描述 | Central field bearing the Arabic legend 'al-Malik al-Salih bi-Dimashq' arranged in multiple lines within a rectangular frame, typical of Ayyubid-style dirhams. A horizontal rule divides the central inscription field from a lower register containing additional text. The marginal segments carry the mint name Dimashq and the date, following the standard Islamic coin layout imitated by the Crusader die-cutters. The die work is bold but irregular, consistent with a Frankish workshop copying Islamic prototypes. The overall composition faithfully replicates Ayyubid dirham typology of the mid-13th century. |

Al-Salih Isma'il, ruler of Damascus, made the politically extraordinary decision in 1240 to ally with the Crusaders against his Ayyubid rival in Egypt — even ceding territory including Sidon and Beaufort Castle to the Franks as part of the arrangement. The Kingdom of Jerusalem exploited this alignment by producing silver imitations of Damascene dirhams, effectively inserting Frankish-minted coin into the regional money supply under the cover of legitimate Islamic iconography and caliphal authority.
The invocation of Abbasid Caliph al-Mustansir served a practical function: it signaled legitimacy to Muslim merchants who would otherwise reject Frankish silver on religious grounds.
