Al-Aziz Billah, the fifth Fatimid caliph, ruled a caliphate stretching from Sicily to Syria at its greatest extent. Sicily had been under Fatimid suzerainty since the mid-tenth century, though the island was administered through semi-autonomous Kalbid governors who issued coinage acknowledging Fatimid legitimacy without strict central minting oversight. This half-dirham fits that pattern — a fractional denomination serving local commercial needs in an economy still transitioning from Byzantine and Aghlabid monetary traditions.
Al-Aziz died in 996 during a campaign in Syria, the only Fatimid caliph to die on campaign.
