Jordan's bimetallic coinage program expanded in 2000 partly in response to counterfeiting pressure on smaller cupro-nickel issues, with the two-tone construction making replication significantly harder for low-tech operations. Abdullah II had ascended to the throne only the previous year following the death of his father Hussein, and the new coin series effectively served as the first major circulating coinage issued under his authority.
KM#79 ran across two decades without a major design revision — unusual longevity for a head-of-state portrait coin during a period when several neighboring central banks refreshed their circulating issues.
