Obverse description The obverse features the allegorical figure of Liberty seated left upon a rock, draped in classical robes, her left arm resting on a shield bearing the inscription LIBERTY on a scroll, and her right hand raised aloft holding a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc around the periphery, seven to the left and six to the right of the central device, with a dentilated border encircling the design. The date is placed prominently in the exergue below the seated figure. The composition reflects the neoclassical style originated by Christian Gobrecht and refined for the reduced-weight coinage authorized by the Act of February 21, 1853.
