The surrounding Latin legend, reading HILTERBRANDVS · DER · EPS · SED ·, identifies the issuing bishop, with the lettering distributed around the circumference in a Gothic or transitional hand typical of mid-to-late sixteenth-century Swiss ecclesiastical coinage.
