Obverse description The Ecuadorian national arms displayed in the central field, depicting an oval shield charged with Mount Chimborazo and a steamship on water, surmounted by a condor with spread wings perched atop the shield. The shield is flanked by flags and a fasces with an axe to the left and palm and laurel branches to the right, all resting on an oval cartouche. The circular legend REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR runs along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, bordered by a continuous beaded rim, with the date 1884 prominently placed in the lower exergue.
