Obverse description Central field displays a quartered heraldic shield bearing rampant lions in each quarter, surmounted by an imperial crown above which emerges additional decorative finial work. The shield is flanked on both sides by elaborate acanthus and foliate scrollwork rendered in high relief. A circular beaded inner border frames the central device, with the circumferential Latin legend running between the inner beaded ring and the toothed outer border. The overall composition is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Low Countries hammered coinage, with the armorial device identifying the issuing abbess Margaret van Brederode of the secular chapter of Thorn.
