Obverse description Crowned half-length effigy of Philip II of Spain facing right, armored and draped, holding a scepter in his right hand and resting his left hand upon a large crowned heraldic shield bearing the quartered arms of Castile, León, Aragon, and other Habsburgian territories. The figure is rendered in the robust late-Renaissance style typical of Southern Netherlandish hammered coinage. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the peripheral Latin legend divided by the royal portrait running clockwise around the coin.
