The leeuwendaalder was never legal tender within the Dutch Republic itself — it was minted almost exclusively for export, circulating widely across the Levant, the Baltic, and the Ottoman Empire, where foreign merchants prized its reliable silver content over local issues. West Friesland was one of the more prolific provincial contributors to this trade coinage ecosystem. A klippe piedfort at double weight occupied a peculiar niche: neither a circulation piece nor a purely ceremonial one, these were typically produced as presentation strikes or to verify the standard of the dies in use, sometimes gifted to civic officials or VOC administrators.
The date appearing on the reverse rather than the obverse is a distinguishing characteristic of this specific die arrangement, noted under HPM Wf 18.2.
