| Beschrijving voorzijde | A fully armored knight stands facing left in the central field, his right hand grasping a bundle of arrows symbolic of the united provinces, and his left arm resting upon a shield bearing the rampant lion of Holland. The knight wears a plumed helmet and period half-armor, rendered in the bold, somewhat rustic style characteristic of hammered Dutch coinage of the late sixteenth century. Beneath the knight's feet, the date 1589 is inscribed in the lower field. The circular legend, interrupted by ornamental crosses, reads MO NO ARG ORDIN HOL, abbreviated from the Latin for 'New silver coinage of the States of Holland.' The coin's irregular flan and beaded inner border are typical of the hammered technique employed at the Dordrecht mint. |
