Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a large Cross of the Order of Christ — a broad, plain Latin cross set within a pointed, lozenge-shaped shield outline — divided into four quadrants, each charged with a trefoil or fleur-de-lis motif. The cross fills virtually the entire field. The encircling legend + IN • HOC • SIGNO • VINCES ('In this sign thou shalt conquer'), a reference to the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese Order of Christ, runs around the border in Latin capital letters, punctuated by bullet separators.
