| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal — the quintas shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five roundels, enclosed within the bordure of seven castles — surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate design. The denomination 200 and the date (1687 on the illustrated example) are placed in the left and right fields respectively, flanking the shield. The circular legend reads PETRVS • II • D • G • PORT • ET • ALG • REX, identifying King Pedro II of Portugal and the Algarves by the grace of God, and runs continuously around the periphery. |
