Obverse description Central shield of Portugal featuring five escutcheons arranged in a cross pattern, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles, all within an ornate crowned cartouche. The denomination 200 appears to the left of the shield in the field, and the date 1689 appears to the right. The encircling legend reads PETRVS.II.D.G.PORTVG.ET.ALG.REX, identifying the issuer as King Pedro II of Portugal and the Algarves, rendered in Latin in a neat upright serif lettering style.
