Obverse description Right-facing draped and armored bust of King James I wearing an ornate crown, rendered in the first bust style of the second coinage. The effigy is contained within an inner beaded circle, with the king depicted with a ruff collar and royal regalia consistent with early Jacobean hammered gold coinage. A mintmark appears at the start of the circumferential Latin legend in the outer field. The portrait is boldly struck in high relief, characteristic of the hand-hammered technique employed at the Tower Mint during this period.
