The halfcrown was effectively absent from British circulation for nearly two decades before 1816. The comprehensive recoinage of that year — driven by the chronic failure of the old hammered and milled silver to survive alongside debased counterfeits — swept out the entire pre-existing silver series and replaced it with Pistrucci and Merlen's new mechanically uniform coinage struck on Boulton's steam presses at the renovated Tower Mint.
George III was already deep into the mental incapacity that had handed the Regency to his son by the time these pieces circulated. He died in January 1820, making the production window for this type just four years.
