1/2 Crown - Elizabeth II Rotary Club of Gibraltar

Rotary International's presence in Gibraltar dates to 1951, when the first local club was chartered under the organization's post-war expansion drive across British territories. This 1991 piece was struck to mark the 40th anniversary of that founding. Gibraltar's output of commemorative gold during this period leaned heavily on fractional crown denominations, largely because the territory's constitutional relationship with the UK allowed independent coinage rights without Bank of England oversight — a useful freedom for a jurisdiction whose numismatic program was frankly more revenue than circulation-oriented.
