Saint Helena's connection to Napoleon is literal — he died there in 1821 after six years of exile under British supervision at Longwood House. The island has leaned into that association commercially for decades, and this copper-nickel half crown is part of that cottage industry of Napoleonic commemoratives issued through Pobjoy Mint and similar contractors rather than any pressing monetary need.
The painting referenced — David's 1801 equestrian portrait — was itself a fabrication. Napoleon crossed the Alps on a mule.
