| Reverse description | Crowned and veiled effigy of Queen Victoria as Empress of India, shown in a three-quarter bust facing left, wearing a small imperial crown and veil with earrings and a necklace, flanked symmetrically on each side by stylised elephants bearing howdahs and attendants. An inlaid ruby gemstone is set above and to the right of the crown. A cartouche in the lower central field bears the inscription EMPRESS OF INDIA, with the denomination 1/2 CROWN displayed beneath in a ribbon scroll. The date 1876 appears to the left of the portrait, commemorating the year Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India. The legend THE VICTORIAN AGE arcs across the upper field. |
