| Additional information |
The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War, running from 1939 to 1945. Gibraltar's role was not peripheral — the base at the Rock controlled the western entrance to the Mediterranean and served as a critical convoy marshalling point, making it a repeated target of Axis sabotage operations, including Italian frogmen who succeeded in sinking several vessels in the harbor.
Gibraltar has issued coins under the Crown dependencies framework since 1988, with half-crown denominations used specifically for commemorative silver issues where the weight lands conveniently at a half-troy-ounce.
