Rhodesia and Nyasaland existed as a federation for barely a decade, formed in 1953 under considerable African opposition and dissolved in 1963 as independence movements made the arrangement politically untenable. The 1955 proof issues were struck at the Royal Mint in London — the federation never operated its own mint — and distributed in a limited proof set marking only the second year of the federation's coinage. The .500 silver specification mirrors the post-war British standard rather than the older Sterling alloy.
