The Kronenthaler was introduced specifically for trade in the Austrian Netherlands after Joseph II's monetary reforms disrupted the established currency system there. Local merchants had long relied on the Spanish-derived coinage familiar to the region, and the new imperial issues met significant commercial resistance. Joseph's simultaneous attempts to centralize Habsburg administration across the Netherlands helped spark the Brabant Revolution of 1789 — which effectively ended the series before it could establish itself.
