The Kronenthaler — or couronne in French-speaking Brabant — was not an Austrian invention but a pragmatic adoption. The type originated under Maria Theresa and was engineered specifically for trade in the southern Netherlands, where local populations distrusted Vienna's monetary policy and preferred coinage that matched familiar Brabantine weight standards. Franz II inherited both the coin and the crisis: by 1792, his Netherlands were already under military threat from Revolutionary France, and the mint at Brussels was striking these pieces even as French armies advanced.
Brussels fell to Dumouriez after Jemappes in November 1792. The series resumed under Austrian reoccupation but ended permanently when France retook the Netherlands in 1794, making the later-dated strikes exceptionally short-run issues.
