Obverse description Central device features the Imperial Korean phoenix (bonghwang), depicted in high relief with wings spread and head turned to the left, set against a background of stylised clouds, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Chinese hanja characters reading 大韓 (Great Korea) appear to the left of the central device, with the regnal era inscription flanking the design on both sides. The Hangul denomination 반젼 and the Latin fractional value 1/2 CHON are inscribed in the lower portion of the field, inside the beaded circle.
