| Obverse description | The national arms of Guatemala occupy the central field, depicting the resplendent quetzal bird perched atop a scroll bearing the inscription 'LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821', flanked by crossed rifles and swords and framed by laurel branches. The legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1946 positioned in the lower exergue. Guatemala's postwar coinage reform of the mid-1940s followed the country's 1944 October Revolution, which ousted the Ubico dictatorship and brought a reformist government under Juan José Arévalo to power. The center dot variety — catalogued separately as KM#248.2 — distinguishes this issue from the earlier KM#248.1 striking, a minor die modification whose precise administrative origin is unrecorded but consistent with the small adjustments made during the transitional period of the new mint contracts.
