Chile's copper-nickel fractional coinage of the early 1870s emerged from a broader monetary reform push following independence-era currency chaos. The half centavo denomination proved almost immediately impractical — too small in value to be useful, too similar in size to other circulating pieces to be reliably distinguished in trade. Production was abandoned after just three years.
