| Obverse description | A large five-pointed star in raised relief occupies the central field, its bold geometric form rendered with deeply incised facets. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE arcs around the periphery, with the date 1853 appearing at the base flanked by two raised dots. The entire design is contained within a beaded border that runs continuously around the coin's inner rim. The composition is simple and heraldic in character, reflecting the republican iconography prevalent on Chilean coinage of the mid-nineteenth century. |

Chile's fractional copper coinage of the 1850s was authorized under the decimal monetary reform of 1851, which replaced the old real-based system. The half centavo was among the smallest units introduced and saw limited practical use — purchasing power at this denomination was so marginal that the series was discontinued within a few years of issue.
