Liberia's 1937 coinage was struck at the Kings Norton Metal Company in Birmingham — the country had no mint of its own and contracted British manufacturers through much of the early twentieth century. This issue came during a particularly fraught period for the republic: the League of Nations had spent the early 1930s investigating Liberian government involvement in forced labor practices, nearly resulting in a full international receivership of the state's finances.
The nickel brass composition was a deliberate economy measure, replacing an earlier copper series.
