Obverse description Draped bust of Landgrave Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt facing right, with long flowing curled hair falling over his shoulders, rendered in a bold baroque style. The portrait is positioned centrally in the field, with the mintmaster initials GK visible in the lower field below the truncation. The encircling Latin legend reads ERNEST LVD D G HASS LANDG PR HERSF G K, running from lower left to upper right around the periphery of the coin.

Reverse description Ornate cross composed of four interlocked crowned script monograms EL (for Ernest Ludwig), arranged symmetrically around a central Roman numeral V denoting the denomination of 5 (Gulden). Small decorative rosettes appear in the angles between the arms of the cross. The date 1733 is inscribed in the lower exergue beneath the cross. The reverse motto OCCULTA PATEBUNT (meaning 'hidden things shall be revealed') runs along the upper periphery as a partial legend, with the continuation EL EL EL EL V completing the inscription around the coin.
