Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered civic arms of Bologna, a large heraldic shield divided into quarters displaying a cross and additional charges, surmounted by a papal tiara and crossed keys — the emblems of Papal authority — flanked by decorative foliate supporters. The Latin legend BONONIA DOCET (Bologna teaches) is disposed around the shield, reading partially on the left and right of the field in the characteristic style of hammered Bolognese coinage. The overall design is bold and deeply struck, typical of the irregular copper issues of the Papal States during the pontificate of Urban VIII.
