Venezuela's fractional silver coinage of this period was struck almost entirely at European mints — Birmingham, Brussels, and Paris handled the bulk of production, as Caracas lacked the infrastructure for consistent domestic striking through most of this span. The coins circulated alongside a monetary system that was repeatedly destabilized by the caudillo governments of the late 19th century, particularly during the chronic fiscal crises of the Guzmán Blanco era.
Production effectively ceased after 1936 as the bolívar's silver fractions were progressively abandoned in favor of cupronickel issues during the López Contreras administration.
