| 正面描述 | Central field bears the ducal shield of Brittany charged with five ermine spots, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic device is rendered in the angular, stylised manner typical of late medieval hammered coinage. A Latin legend surrounds the shield along the outer rim, reading FRANCISCVS BRITONV DVX, identifying the issuer as Francis, Duke of the Bretons, with the mint initial N appearing at the end of the legend. The overall strike is characteristic of irregular hammered production, with the design slightly off-centre. |

The attribution to both Francis I (r. 1442–1450) and Francis II (r. 1458–1488) reflects a genuine dating problem: the type was struck across both reigns without sufficient distinguishing characteristics to assign individual pieces with confidence. Brittany maintained its own mint infrastructure and monetary system well into the late fifteenth century, a privilege jealously guarded against French encroachment. Francis II's eventual defeat at Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier in 1488 effectively ended Breton independence, and with it, the duchy's coinage.
