Obverse description Central quartered shield displaying the arms of France (fleurs-de-lis) in the first and fourth quarters, and the arms of Dauphiné (a dolphin) in the second and third quarters, all within a beaded inner circle. The shield is rendered in a Gothic heraldic style characteristic of mid-15th century French feudal coinage. A circular Latin legend in uncial lettering surrounds the central device, reading the ruler's title. The flan is irregular in shape, typical of hammered medieval production.
