| Dodatkowe informacje |
Herman Gossling was a merchant operating in the Danish West Indies who issued private trade tokens to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued the islands throughout the eighteenth century. The "3 Black Dogs" denomination — a colonial unit of account used across multiple Caribbean jurisdictions — had no official coinage equivalent, leaving local merchants to fill the gap themselves. British occupation of the Danish islands during this period further disrupted normal monetary channels, making privately issued brass pieces like this one functionally necessary rather than merely convenient.
