Ethiopia's 1897 coinage was struck to assert independence at a moment of maximum political urgency — just one year after the Battle of Adwa, where Menelik II's forces had decisively defeated the Italian army and shattered any realistic prospect of colonial annexation. The coins were produced at the Paris Mint, as Ethiopia lacked domestic minting capacity, and were deliberately modeled on the Maria Theresa Thaler's weight standard to integrate with established East African trade networks.
The "lion's right foreleg raised" distinction separates this from otherwise similar issues and reflects die variation across the Paris production run rather than any intentional design revision.
