Ethiopia's 1931 coinage was produced in anticipation of Haile Selassie's formal coronation, which took place in November 1930. Pattern pieces from this period were struck at the Paris Mint, which had handled Ethiopian coinage since the Maria Theresa thaler dominated the region's trade economy. The 1931 patterns were never released for general circulation — monetary reform stalled, and the full series remained in limbo until Italian invasion in 1936 effectively ended the first coinage program of Selassie's reign.
