1/2 Batzen 'Doppler' Pointed top shield, MONETA LVCERNENSIS

Lucerne began striking its own Batzen coinage in the early sixteenth century largely in response to the monetary chaos produced by the proliferation of under-weight and debased small silver circulating across the Swiss Confederation. The Doppler — half a Batzen — filled a practical gap between the penny denominations and the larger silver issues, and Lucerne's civic mint operated under direct supervision of the city council, which maintained unusually tight control over alloy standards compared to many contemporary Swiss issuers.

The pointed-top shield variant distinguishes this from the later flat-top issues, a detail that places it firmly within the earliest phase of the city's Batzen production.
