Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of Bern — a walking bear passant to sinister on a diagonally divided field — set within an ornate cartouche with scrollwork framing. The shield is enclosed by a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend MONETA REIPUBLICÆ BERNENSIS running along the outer ring, separated by a small six-pointed star at the base. The overall design reflects the civic heraldic tradition of the Swiss cantonal coinage of the 18th century.
